What is Ceramic Drum Brake and how it works?

Ceramic drum brake is a new kind of drum brake applied on electric scooter. The core technology shows on the ceramic composite pad and labor-saving roller brake structure.

The principle of a drum brake system is to slow down or stop a vehicle by using a pair of brake shoes to press against the inside of a rotating drum that is attached to the wheel. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure is sent to the wheel cylinder, which pushes the brake shoes against the drum, generating friction that slows the wheel down. The brake shoes are typically lined with a heat-resistant material called friction lining, which wears down over time and needs to be replaced periodically. Drum brakes are less efficient than disc brakes, as they tend to overheat and lose their effectiveness under heavy use.

The principle of a disc brake system is to slow down or stop a vehicle by using a caliper to squeeze a pair of brake pads against a spinning metal disc (rotor) attached to the wheel hub. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure is sent to the caliper, which closes the pads onto the rotor, generating friction that slows the wheel down. The brake pads are typically ceramic or metallic, and are designed to withstand high temperatures and wear. The disc brake system is more efficient than drum brakes, as it dissipates heat more easily and provides better stopping power.

Compared to ordinary drum brake, the advantages of ceramic drum brake shows on two points: better brake performance and longer lifecycle. In terms of performance, the emergency braking distance can be shortened more than 30%; in the case of continuous braking, performance won’t deteriorate due to overheating of the brake pads. In terms of lifecycle, ceramic composites material has good wear resistance and high temperature resistance. The fully sealed cover design protects the brake from water and mud. Experimental data shows that the wear resistance of the ceramic brake is more than 5 times that of the ordinary drum brake. Since Luyuan launched this technology in June 2017, it is welcomed by users.
